Vision-Sciences at the SCCM Annual Meeting

The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) is the largest organization dedicated to ensuring excellence in the practice of critical care.  With nearly 16,000 members in more than 100 countries, SCCM is the only organization that represents all professional components of the critical care team.  The SCCM’s 41st Critical Care Conference was held in Houston, TX, February 5th through the 7th, 2012, where Vision Sciences exhibited their full line of high performance flexible bronchoscopes, imaging technology, and the patented, innovative EndoSheath® Technology,

In a highlight for Vision-Sciences' technology, Dr. Deepak Gupta (Department of Anesthesiology, Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center) presented research results on EndoSheath® Bronchoscopy during the Professor Walk Rounds at the conference.  Entitled An Observational Study of Cost-Effective Analysis of Flexible Optical Reusable Scopes with and without EndoSheath® Technology: An Effect of Turnover Time on Costs, Dr. Gupta compared the cost of intubations using the VSI fiber bronchoscope and EndoSheath® Technology versus an Olympus fiberscope.  The results showed that the cost of an intubation with an Olympus scope was $119.75 and the intubation costs with a VSI fiber scope with EndoSheath Technology were $81.50; in addition, there was a 25 minute time savings when the VSI system was usedBesides the outstanding monetary savings EndoSheath® Bronchoscopy affords with intubations, Dr. Gupta also addressed concerns with cross-contamination, repair costs, and adequate disinfection of conventional fiberoptic bronchoscopes.

American College of Chest Physicians Annual Meeting/CHEST 2011

Vision-Sciences showcased their revolutionary EndoSheath® Pulmonology product line at the American College of Chest Physicians Annual Meeting, in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The meeting ran from October 22nd through the 26th.  At the CHEST meeting, as it is typically referred to, attendees visited sessions focusing on numerous curriculum areas such as Biotechnology, Lung Cancer, Respiratory Care, Pulmonology Procedures, and Critical Care.  Also, the CHEST meeting featured Original Investigations and Poster Grand Rounds, a Clinical Resource Center, Coding and Reimbursement Consultations, Keynote Address speakers, and Continuing Education Courses.

An all new feature at CHEST this year was the Centers of Excellence, a special dedicated area for programs and practices that improve health-care outcomes.  Providers presented the outstanding characteristics and practices that make them unique in touchdown stations that complemented the themes presented in the Center of Excellence.  Attendees interacted with experts to hear what has made them successful in patient care.

The ACCP Simulation Center also enhanced attendees’ learning in a hands-on clinical environment.  The center featured sophisticated equipment and skilled faculty to help develop the cognitive, technical, and behavioral skills needed for optimal patient care across a variety of situations.

Vision-Sciences attends the APIC 2011 Annual Conference in Baltimore.

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) held its 38th annual educational conference and international meeting in Baltimore, MD June 27th through the 29th 2011.  This conference was one of the largest gatherings of infection preventionists in the world and is considered to be the premier educational opportunity for healthcare professionals responsible for infection prevention programs.   

Translating Science—Sustainable Solutions was the theme for this year’s APIC. APIC featured 60+ educational sessions and cutting-edge workshops taught by industry experts. Standing room only was available in the lecture halls as leaders discussed real world solutions to the most challenging infection prevention issues.

In the exhibition hall, Vision-Sciences, along with over 200 other exhibitors, showcased technology and products that aid in the prevention of healthcare associated infections.  Vision-Sciences showed its full line of advanced flexible endoscopes that utilize our pioneering EndoSheath® Technology. Vision-Sciences at the ESA Congress in Amsterdam

European Society of Anaesthesiology  Annual Congress - 2011
The European Anesthesiology Congress was held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, June 11th through the 14th.  Anesthesiologists from Eastern and Western Europe, North Africa and the Middle East worked together for a brighter future in healthcare.  The meeting focused on promoting exchanges in education, research and innovation.
Standing room only was available in the lecture halls as leading scientists and physicians in the field hosted refresher courses, interactive discussions, workshops, and abstract presentations.  The ESA Scientific Committee composed a comprehensive program which includes developments in research, technical innovation, and clinical treatment in areas of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, and Pain treatment.  Colleagues spoke on such topics as patient safety, maintenance of oxygenation throughout airway management, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, and video laryngoscopes.

Vision-Sciences at the FDA Public Workshop on Reprocessing of Reusable Medical Devices

FDA Holds a Public Workshop on Reprocessing of Reusable Medical Devices
on June 8th and 9th, 2011

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held a public workshop to discuss factors affecting the quality of reprocessing of reusable medical devices on Wednesday and Thursday. The FDA, as well as healthcare practitioners, industry representatives and the scientific community, worked to identify issues involving inadequately reprocessed reusable medical devices.  This forum allowed all stakeholders in the healthcare community to hear from hospital staff, manufacturers, healthcare engineers, and government officials. While the topics covered various reusable medical devices, surgical components and flexible endoscopes appeared to attract the greatest interest.

As a pioneer in healthcare practice and device efficiency with a focus on infection control solutions for flexible endoscopy, Vision-Sciences was in attendance to develop a greater understanding of the issues involved for all stakeholders, and with a desire to contribute to the development of the best in guidance documentation, leading to innovative change in design where possible, all leading to an end point of enhancing patient safety. The workshop provided a great place to hear the needs and interests of all healthcare parties.

A great deal of emphasis was placed on flaws in device design, specifically those that make cleaning and disinfection/sterilization difficult. Issues such as the difficulty in cleaning, brushing, and flushing the lumen/working channels of conventional flexible endoscopes and instruments appeared paramount.

Some additional topics that were discussed included: adequate validation of manufacturer IFU’s, clear/easy to follow IFU’s, Central Services challenges, challenges manufacturers face, Non OEM repairs to reusable medical devices, and an overview of the FDA’s draft guidance on Reusable Medical Devices.
